Starting a new skincare routine with The Ordinary

So, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have no doubt heard about The Ordinary. A brand under the Deciem umbrella, that has quickly become a cult favourite for it’s amazing active skincare products at very affordable prices.

I’ve been wanting to revamp my skincare routine for a while, but had no idea where to start. I know that I have problematic skin. It’s extremely oily normally, I have redness, hyper pigmentation, blemishes and acne scarring. I have very acne prone skin and find that some of my regular skin care products can make this worse once spots appear. I also do not have much of a budget, so The Ordinary was an extremely affordable option for me.

For someone who is so used to just cleansing, toning and moisturising with products from the drug store, I was well out of my comfort zone when I visited The Ordinary website. Although there is a small guide on there, I decided to research a little bit about the products and found some great advice on a post from Victoria Health amongst others.

One of the main things I was able to get my head around was the difference between AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acids) exfoliants and how these might benefit my skin. The biggest difference is that AHA’s work on the skin’s surface and that BHA’s work on the surface and in the pores.I was able to read the information and choose products which I thought would be best suited to my skin type and would help to improve the things I wanted to target.

I thought I would go through each of the products that I chose and then at the end I will share with you my new skin care routine. I will then update each month with how I think the new routine is going.

Beauty buy of the month – Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask

Welcome to the first instalment of beauty buy of the month at The Plus Size of Life! I know I said this post would originally hit the blog on Friday, I couldn’t wait any longer! This new monthly feature is all about that one beauty product I have bought that I cannot get enough of! This month, it’s the Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask!

I’ve made no secret on the blog about my struggle with my terrible oily skin. Day to day, I only use oil free moisturiser and makeup so as to not add to the problem. I literally go out of my way everyday to avoid adding excess moisture to my skin, to use products that diffuse the oil and to make my skin as matte as it can be to make my makeup last! The trouble with that is that at least once a month, I notice patches of my skin that are dry and flaky because there literally is no moisture left in my skin.

When this happens, it can be so frustrating because it’s hard to find the perfect balance, to get rid of the dry and flaky without adding to the problem of the oil! I was researching intensive moisture treatments to help me and came across the Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask!

Loreal Pure Clay Purity Mask!

I have always heard great things about clay masks and how they work for us oily skin folks. They help to really absorb substances like sebum and clear your pores from excess gunk! I was really excited when I saw this Loreal Pure Clay Purity Mask on offer in my local Boots and really wanted to give it a try.

There are three different types of the Loreal pure clay mask, all of which contain 3 pure clays. Each mask is targeted to as specific skin type. The Detox Mask contains active charcoal and aims to clarify the skin. The Glow Mask, with red algae aims to exfoliate the skin and give you a natural glow.  I chose to buy the purity mask because I felt it was the one that would be the most beneficial to my skin type, but there really is nothing stopping me using all three!!!

Vichy Normaderm – Skincare Review!

Hi guys! Hope you’re good, I’m back today with a Review of Vichy Normaderm!

I don’t normally do premium skincare, but over the last sort of 8 months to a year I developed hormonal acne around my jawline. It became increasingly worse as the months went on, it would clear up and then flare up again just before my period twice as bad as it had before!

If you’ve ever suffered from any form of acne, you know how distressing it can be. Seeing it become increasingly worse and getting more painful made me so upset. I have never suffered with acne before, I mean I’ve had the odd spot here and there but this was sore, painful and whatever I did I just could not get rid of it!

I decided that I had to find something that could help. I haven’t changed my skincare routine for a while, so I went on the hunt for something to help clear this up once and for all. Whilst researching, I came across the Normaderm range from Vichy!

A lot of people were loving this range online so I decided to try two products myself!

Vichy Normaderm HYALUSPOT £10.50 – Boots

This little tube of gel is amazing, I use it in so many different ways! It is enriched with Hyaluronic acid and creates an invisible protective film on the skin. I have tried it on its own and under/over my make up and it still works just as well. The packaging is lovely, and it has a lovely metal applicator which soothes the skin as you’re applying the product.

What I love the most about this is that it’s a lovely thick product that spreads beautifully and you cannot see it on the skin, it’s clear in colour and dries fairly quickly without becoming too tacky.

Oily Skin – My must have products!

Having any form of oily skin is usually a complete nightmare when you want to wear make up, mine certainly never used to last! I consider myself to have combination skin as it is extremely sensitive and dry in parts, but in others it is incredibly oily.

Getting make up to stay on my face was becoming an intense struggle and I looked a mess only two or three hours after applying make up! So after the long hard struggle of constantly trying different products and changing up my beauty routine, I have found products that actually help to combat my oily skin problem! Here are four of my must haves!

Oily Skin - The Plus Size of Life - Emma Ellis

1.Garnier Oily Skin Clarifying Wash £3.29 Boots – This is a great wash for the morning. After use, there is no shine left on my face and you can feel the mattifying effecting it has as it dries. I also use this after removing my make up in the evening

2. Garnier Moisture Match Matte Moisturiser £4.19 Boots  – Another fab product, this oil free moisturiser compliments the face wash and because it is oil free does not leave any greasy nasty residue. It provides great hydration without adding to my problem areas.

3. Tea Tree and Witch Hazel Facial Mask with Active Charcoal – £3.59 Boots – Im in love with this mask! This mask contains active charcoal, which helps to keep skin clean and healthy by removing dirt, sebum and impurities. It also gets rid of oil leaving my skin shine free! I use this about once a week, or before I put my make up on when going on a night out to keep myself from becoming an oily mess!! I love that its got tea tree and witch hazel, meaning its also extremely kind to the sensitive skin on my face too. Boots have a few different products in this range which i’m keen to try as well.

4. Mac Blot Film £12.00 Mac online – Does exactly what it says on the tin, perfect to have in your handbag to remove excess oil. This differs from other blotting products I have used as it’s a film and not a paper and it has become my favourite for this reason. It can be pretty disgusting to see how much oil I have accumulated on my skin during the day, this helps to refresh my make up without necessarily having to apply more powder and make myself look cakey!

Getting used to oily skin was hard, but knowing your own skin and knowing which products can help will be a great start getting your confidence back in your beauty regime!

Do you have oily skin? What are your favourite beauty products to use?
