If you follow me on social media, you may have seen my posts on Twitter and Instagram yesterday about Real Nappy Week 2019!
I have a few posts coming up this week including one about busting the myths about cloth nappies and our own personal cloth nappy journey. First I thought I would share some info about disposable nappies and also some websites and groups I found helpful that you can check out if you’re thinking about using cloth!
I was shocked to discover some of the hard hitting facts about disposable nappies, mainly that 1 disposable nappy takes 500 years to biodegrade! According to Baby Centre around 7 Million disposable nappies are thrown away in the UK every day, this figure is incredible, just imagine how long those nappies are in landfill!
Of course there is a great incentive with cloth nappies in that you will save alot of money. The average cost of disposables per child is around £750 from birth to potty, meaning that after buying your cloth nappies, you could save around £600 depending on brand and style chosen as some are more expensive than others.
So if you’re thinking of getting started with cloth nappies, here are some places to start!
The Nappy Lady website has some fantastic resources alongside a shop where you can buy every type of cloth nappy ever! In the nappy advice section, there is everything you could want, including advice on choosing your nappy system to the best way to wash and dry your cloth nappies. What I love about The Nappy Lady is that she also has an advice questionnaire, you answer the questions and she gets back to you about the type of nappy she would recommend for you. It takes into account your personal circumstances and lifestyle needs and is a completely free service with no obligation to purchase anything. You can access the questionnaire here
The UK Nappy Network is a fantastic resource that helps you find your local nappy library. A nappy library is just like a regular one except it’s for cloth nappies. Some offer rentals and loans, some you can just go and check out all the different types of nappies that are on the market. One thing is for sure, the libraries are a fantastic resource for anyone wanting to try cloth nappies before they buy. You can find your local nappy library here
Some local Council’s offer real nappy incentives. From money back if you buy cloth nappies to free trial kits, it’s worth checking if your Council offers one of these incentives. It’s fantastic that quite alot are on board, helping to target the issue locally is the first step to helping nationally.
In the age of social media and the internet it is no surprise that there are dedicated Facebook groups for cloth nappies! My favourite is Cloth Nappies UK. This group is full of knowledgeable people who are kind and answer all kinds of questions about cloth nappies. You can post questions directly to the group or just be a lurker, there is so much helpful advice and a must join if you’re thinking about cloth nappies.
I hope you found this post useful, it was meant to be just a general introduction and some useful links on where to go if you’re thinking about starting your cloth nappy journey. I have a few more posts scheduled for Real Nappy Week 2019 so please do check back and read those too! Feel free to contact me for help and advice also!
