When it comes to makeup, I have to admit that I am a bit of a hoarder. So recently when James and I decided to redecorate our bedroom in the new house, I decided it was definitely time to think about decluttering my makeup collection. In doing so I noticed a few little rules that I followed when deciding to either keep something or get rid, so I thought I would share some tips with you!
Anything out of date simply must go!
Obviously this is a no brainer. I hate to even think about what a state some of the makeup in my drawer was in or even how long it had been sat there. I actually never used to even think about it, but some of the foundation I threw away was seperated and manky looking.
I’m not sure on the effects of using out of date makeup, but thinking logically I’m assuming it won’t perform like it should and worse case scenario it could harbour some pretty nasty bacteria, which if used could have a negative effect on your skin. If it’s a product for the eyes, it might even cause you some damage so it’s seriously not worth it. It was one of the easiest steps when decluttering my makeup collection as everything out of date just went, the decision was already made for me so it made things slightly easier.
A tip is that there is a little symbol on the back that tells you how long you have to use the product after opening before it needs to go in the bin. I have started sticking little stickers on, so I know when to throw things away. This means I won’t build up a load of products in the future.
Is it really your colour?
If you are anything like me, then you probably buy a lipstick or eyeshadow colour because you like it not because you’re going to use it. Again like me it’s probably sat at the back of your draw and has never been used. We are creatures of habit and I know I tend to find myself reaching for the same lippies over and over.
So if you’re looking to clear out your makeup, then get rid of anything you don’t use, even if it’s still within then use by. If something is sealed and still within the use by, consider donating it to a friend or your local women’s shelter.
Don’t buy anything else and use up your empties!
Once I had finished decluttering my makeup collection, I started thinking about ways I could avoid getting that bad again. Inspired by YouTube, I am trying two things moving forward
- Once I open a product, I am going to try to concentrate on using just that until it is empty. So for example, I do like to switch my foundation ALOT depending on what type of skin day I am having, but under this new rule I am going to have 1 bottle on the go at a time and not buy anymore, which leads me onto my next point ……
- A no buy challenge!! This is going to be difficult for me, but for June and July, I am really going to try not to buy anything new at all. I’m going to focus on using up some of the stuff I already have like my foundation and concealer. I have just stocked up on my skincare so hopefully I won’t need to buy any, but I might make an exception for The Ordinary.
I found it so hard decluttering my makeup because I just love it. But to be honest, I was in such a mess it was hardly fitting into the drawers in my lovely vintage dressing table. It’s definitely given me so much more room to really think about the products I have and what I am using to do my makeup. It’s so nice to be able to open my drawers and not have to dig deep to find what I am looking for.
Have you had a clear out recently? any other tips for me when I’m decluttering my makeup next time?
